150 years of Geberit Our success story
The Geberit story dates back to 1874, when it started as a one-man operation in the old town of Rapperswil, Switzerland. Some 30 years later, company founder Albert Gebert developed a wooden cistern lined with lead. The company gained further momentum with the groundbreaking invention of the first plastic cistern in 1952, followed by the concealed cistern in 1964.
What started out as a modest family business has since emerged as the European market leader for sanitary products. Our innovative, high-quality products for sanitary technology and the bathroom continue to set new standards: then, now and in the future.
Focus on sustainability
Sustainability has always been very important to Geberit and forms part of the company’s identity. We place a great deal of emphasis on ensuring our considerations of the environment, economic factors and social issues are in balance.
Environmentally friendly, resource-saving and durable products and solutions for green building, production processes that minimise water and energy consumption, and clean potable water have been key topics for Geberit for many years. Responsible education, social projects with apprentices and an awareness of social responsibility around the important issue of water are also areas of focus.
“Sustainability and social responsibility are closely interrelated and are important subjects for us. Geberit has shown that economic success, acting in an environmentally friendly manner and social balance are not a contradiction in terms. On the contrary, we regard sustainability as an opportunity to go down new roads. The Geberit Group wishes to maintain its top position amongst its competitors in the field of sustainability and thus to continue to be a role model for the industry in future.“- Albert M. Baehny, Chairman of the Board, in the Sustainability Report
